Being Goofy: 10 Ways To Goof Around At Walt Disney World

Please welcome back guest blogger Curtis Stone.  Curtis is one of the cohosts (with his daughter, Lindsay) of the Geekin’ on WDW Podcast.  If you haven’t checked out this show, you need to give it a listen – Curt and Lindsay have a lot of fun and share great stories and tips.  Follow Geekin’ on WDW on Facebook here and follow Curt on Twitter here.

Gaston's Fountain at Walt Disney WorldBeing Goofy:  10 Ways To Goof Around At Walt Disney World

I’m mostly a serious, shy and quiet guy. I often was annoyed in college when kids were always goofing around.

On the other hand,

  • I like to have a good time
  • I like to be different
  • Awkward silence/idleness bothers me
  • When someone asks for volunteers, I raise my hand

I purposely sit in front in meetings or events.  I step out of my comfort zone all the time in crowds of people either for work, training or on vacation.

I think you should too if you’d like to enhance your Disney World experience.  My friends often comment that they want to go with us on vacation because our pictures prove we have a good time.

Here’s my 10 ways and opportunities for you to goof around at Disney World:

Goofing …

Goofin' around with the Tooth FairyWith other guests

People let their guard down on vacation.  It can be much easier to get into a conversation with other guests.  On our last vacation, we had some fun with guests.  One time was when we all wore our new Malestrom t-shirts.  First, we got lots of comments from guests on our shirts.  Second, one young man was wearing the same shirt, we took a picture together and rode the ride together.  We also ran into him again the next day and we plan on having him on the podcast.

Another fun time was at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.  Many guests dress up for the special event which is fun in of itself.  One group of five guests really caught my attention as they were dressed as the Flintstones and one guy was the Tooth Fairy.  I just had to interact with them and I did get my picture with the Tooth Fairy.  <Insert Picture>

With cast members

I enjoy chatting with the cast members.  One of my favorites was the doorman that used to work at the Beach Club.  My wife and I took our picture with him.  He was such an nice man. One of my favorite new things to do with cast members is to pin trade.  No matter where you encounter a cast member with pins, it an opportunity to chat and have some fun trading.

Hanging out with Walt Disney World Street PerformersWith street players

There are so many opportunities to join in the show.  Over the years, I believe my family and I have participated in just about them all.  I like the time my wife was picked in EPCOT as an old witch who casts a spell with the World Showcase Players. The Ziti Sisters had swooned over me in Italy.  My son’s girlfriend, on her first visit, played with the clown/juggler in Italy. We always look to be picked for all the shows.

With photo pass photographers

The big tip with the Disney photographers is to remember to ask them if they have a “magic” shot.  On our last trip, we purchased the Memory Maker package and we took advantage.  They had a ton of new magic shots that put the characters in your pictures.  You get a chance to act Goofy and then see what character they put in your picture after you get home and check the shots out online.

With hats and toys in the gift shops

When I was a child, my parents were strict.  For one thing, I was not allowed to touch items in a store.  I was always amazed that nobody bothers you as you get Goofy with trying on hats and taking pictures.  Put on a viking hat and put your finger up a trolls nose in Norway pavillion in EPCOT.  You can put on a pirate hat and have a sword fight after riding the Pirates of the Caribbean.  This last trip, I finally bought the hat and dreadlocks.  It was fun walking through Magic Kingdom as Jack Sparrow.  I got lots of looks and comments.

With charactersMeeting Tigger

Even though our kids are all grown up, we still take time to get pictures with characters.  On the past trip, Tigger grabbed my pirate hat and put it on.  My wife and 21 year old daughter got hugs from Pooh and Eeyore.  Baloo is my favorite from my childhood.  I have a favorite picture with him.  I really like a picture my wife and I got with Mickey and Minnie in Magic Kingdom.  It was actually a very private moment and they were a lot of fun.

With attractions

If you jump up and down or get to some attractions early, you can participate in the show.  I’ve been picked to be Captain of the PT boat in the backlot tour, an extra on the Indiana Jones Stunt Show and I was just picked on our last trip to get on stage at the Flights of Wonder.  My only regret is that I one day want to be “That Guy” in the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor show.

In the queues

Disney World has improved waiting in line for attractions by adding things to do or see.  The Haunted Mansion on one of my favorites.  While posing for a picture in front of the Sea Captain, I was sneezed on by the Captain.  We got a lot of laughs in that queue.  Another of my favorite new queues is for the Little Mermaid in New FantasyLand.  There’s a lot of cool places to take pictures.  Try to wave to the little crabs in some of the caves.  The crab will see you and steal an object from the scene. It’s a lot of fun.

Curtis on Splash MountainMake a face in ride picture

I’m usually caught smiling or screaming on the rides that capture a picture.  One fun thing you can do is plan a face or pose to show the camera as you go by.  The more you ride the more likely you’ll know where the picture is taken.  Splash Mountain is an easy one because it’s going to be where you take the plunge into the brier patch.  On our last trip, we decided to put our hands to our face.  Funny part of the picture was that Lindsay and I did it and Mom was taking a picture.  Now with Memory Maker, you get all the ride pictures included in your package.  The pictures often show some really funny moments you don’t want to miss.

Get your face painted or wear a costume

One great time we had this year was at the new Harambe Nights at Animal Kingdom.  Lindsay and I took advantage of the exclusive ticketed event.  It was a street party and a special Lion King theatrical show.  Before the show, we had some fun getting in the spirit by with face Face Painting at Walt Disney Worldpainting.  I forgot I had the paint on and wiped it off accidentally while wiping sweat off my face.  We had some laughs and luckily was able to get it touched up before the show.  I think it would be fun as a family for all to get their face painted while in the parks.  It would make for a great picture and you’d get lots of attention from guests and cast members.  I was surprised how much fun and reaction I had when I just wore my Captain Jack hat on our last trip.

There you have it. Ten ways to goof around at Disney World.

Disney World not only allows goofing around in the parks and “On Stage” but they encourage it. I say let your guard down, get in the mood and let loose.  You’ll have even more fun at Disney World.

The Dixie Landings Radio Podcast

Dixie Landings RadioPlease join me in welcoming the Dixie Landings Radio Podcast!  The new kids on the block, co-hosts Scott and Matt have fired up an awesome weekly show full of Disney history, fun, and Southern hospitality!  Scott’s here today to tell y’all why you need to give this show a listen!

“We’re gonna take you down, we’re gonna take you down, we’re gonna take you all the way down. Goin’ down the bayou, goin’ down the bayou, takin’ you all the way!”

Since we are relatively new to podcasts, we don’t have a huge history, but what we do have so far, I hope you enjoy.  Matt and I started the Dixie Landings Radio Podcast back in August.  We had our first podcast recording together back in March when we took over the Enchanted Tiki Talk Podcast on April Fool’s Day.  From that day on, we talked about how much fun it was and that we should look into doing one together.  The thought about it was fun, but it just kind of faded away.  I was about to lose my job due to my resort burning down and my wife was due to have our first child in just a couple of months.  Life was about to get hectic.  I wanted to see how being a new dad would be and what time I would have available before getting into it.  Well let’s forward to today.  I now have a wonderful 2.5 month old baby boy and have been able to find some free time, although I don’t exactly know how!

Matt and I talked again and decided to take the first step and get going.  What seemed easy in theory turned out to be very hard.  What would our podcast name be?  What would our Twitter name be? Would we have a dedicated website or just the hosting site website?  I go so excited with the thought of it all, as overwhelming as it was at first. We created our own website, finally decided on a name that had a lot of meaning to both of us, and just kept going.  Dixie Landings Radio was officially born!Bayou Country

Now…where do we start?  We’ve got all the hard stuff out of the way, or so we thought.  Now we actually had to record!  How do we record though?  Neither of us had done this other than the day we were guests.  Once recorded, how do we edit?  And how does it get posted to iTunes, Stitcher and everything else?  After much research and asking other podcasters for help, we were on our way.  But another roadblock…what do we discuss?  These shows need some thought put into them.  It didn’t seem to be getting any easier.  We had a brainstorming call and finally decided on everything.  And what can I say, it’s been an absolutely pleasure and a lot of fun recording and sharing our passion for Disney with our listeners.  We had a lot of fun creating a new game show, Name That Disney Tune where we brought on three guests to play as well. Thanks to Lisa Green for being so much fun and bringing a whole new level of excitement to the show…even for getting last place!

So here we are, just now releasing our 7th episode.  We’ve gone over the history of Dixie Landings/Port Orleans Riverside, played Name That Disney Tune, talked about what we would do if we had to add, remove, or change parts of EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.  We went over our top park music and discussed taking your children to Disney.  Want to know more about any of those?  You’ll have to tune in to the show and find out.  New shows are released on Monday, just in time to have for your morning commute to work.

We hope you get your sweet tea and join us in the bayou each week!

Meet Gary and Mike from the Por Favor Podcast

Por Favor Hosts Mike and Gary

Mike and (baby) Gary, friends from the start!

Disney Podcasts are a big part of my everyday life.  I know on which days of the week my favorite ones release new episodes, I listen to certain shows on my commute to and from work and certain ones while I run, I listen to some for news and updated Walt Disney World information.  A few, I listen to because they’re just plain fun!  Those are the ones where the hosts talk about their love for Disney, their favorite Disney resorts, foods, rides, attractions, and memories.  Honestly?  Those are my most favorite type of podcasts to listen to – you feel as if you’re right there with the show’s hosts, hanging out with friends.

Today I’d like to introduce you to one of those super fun podcasts and its hosts.  The Por Por Favor Podcast Hosts Mike and Gary as childrenFavor Podcast, just a few months old, has captured listeners’ hearts and gathered quite a sizable fan base – all because of two guys, cousins, Gary Arruda and Mike Hurley.  They’re two best friends just talking about Disney.  And sometimes sports and beer.  The fact that Gary’s in Rhode Island and Mike’s in Minnesota doesn’t make a difference – they’re a great podcasting team!  They may give each other a hard time, but their unmistakable friendship is what makes this podcast a hit.

I was fortunate enough to score an invitation to be a guest on a couple of episodes of the Por Favor Podcast (19 & 20), so I can tell you first hand – Gary and Mike are as charming, witty, fun and funny in real life as they seem to be on their show.  After we recorded the podcast, they were kind enough to grant me an interview.  Now you can get to know Gary and Mike better as well.

Meet Gary and Mike from the Por Favor Podcast

1.  What unexpected surprises (good and/or bad) has podcasting brought you?

Por Favor Podcast / Gary Snacking

Gary snacking on a Disney vacation

Gary:   Podcasting has been a lot of fun for me. I’ve always been full of hot air, so being able to share my thoughts and opinions on something I’m so passionate about is great. It’s been a huge surprise at how many people have become fans so soon. I assumed you had to establish yourself for a year before people would listen. We’ve been lucky that other great Disney podcasts have listened and mentioned us to their listeners. I know the guys at Resort Loop, Enchanted Tiki Talk and Drunk on Disney have all given us shout-outs on their shows, and it sends new people our way. I think the best thing to come out of doing the Por Favor Podcast thus far is some of the great friends we’ve made (like Lisa!).

Mike has been a Disney fan forever!

MikeHonestly, what was unexpected was that people would listen.  Gary and I started this, because we simply wanted to talk weekly about Disney and just throw it up on iTunes and Stitcher.  I had no clue people would listen and enjoy it and want to actively engage with it on Twitter and/or being on the show.

2.  Who are the top three guests you’d be most thrilled to have on your show?  (Dream big here)

Por Favor Gary with Belle

Gary and Belle!

Gary:  If we could get any three guests on the Por Favor Podcast, I’d have to choose people who would be willing to be silly and play along with Mike’s and my foolishness. I’m not saying I wouldn’t want great and informative guests on the show, but our style doesn’t mesh well with “hard-hitting” interviews. If we could get living legend Richard Sherman on the show, my life would be complete, but I feel like that episode wouldn’t be as fun as most of our others because I wouldn’t want to waste his time with our inside jokes and the constant grief Mike and I hurl at one another. There are certainly Disney celebrities who would get our “humor” so I’ll make my list with that in mind. 1. Dick Van Dyke 2. Patrick Warburton and 3. Neil Patrick Harris.

Mike:  1. Michael Eisner – I love, love, love Disney resorts and he was the one who transformed Walt Disney World into a major resort.  2.  Richard Sherman – I really enjoy Disney music, especially the Carousel of Progress theme song.  I would love to learn about Walt through him.  3.  George Brett – The Hall of Fame 3rd baseman of the Kansas City Royals and 1985 World Series Champion.  He was my favorite player growing up.  As a young nerd, I would wear my ‘Brett’ jersey to Fenway Park.  Hey, they all didn’t have to be Disney related, did they?

Book of Disney Parks Posters3.  What’s your Disney lucky charm – or most favorite, treasured Disney item?

Gary:  I wouldn’t say I have a specific Disney lucky charm, but I have lots of Disney items that I love having around because they remind me of what I love so much about the parks. If my house was on fire and all my truly important things were safe (wife, future child, photos, golf clubs, podcasting equipment, beer fridge) and I could run back in and grab one Disney item, I’d probably grab my “Just Married” Disney Christmas ornament. It has sentimental value because my wife and I got it on our honeymoon in Walt Disney World. If not that, then I really love my “Poster Art of the Disney Parks” book.Disney Ornament / Por Favor Gary

Mike's Donald 2MikeI couldn’t decide my favorite, so I will give you two.  First would have to be my Donald Duck 50th birthday stuffed animal.  I got it back in the 80’s when they were celebrating his 50th.  I kept the original tag on it.  Secondly, my wooden carved Donald Duck that I keep in my Disney figurine case.  Donald is my favorite character and when my dad was in Orlando on a business trip, he picked it up for me.  It was a great surprise when he came home.

4.  The one thing you love most about Walt Disney World?

Por Favor Gary with Donald Duck

Gary and Frontierland Donald

Gary:  One thing?! How dare you try and limit me to one thing to love about Walt Disney World? Ok, I’m sorry, it is your blog after all. I’ll play nice. I guess the thing I love most if I had to narrow it down is the shared feeling of wonderment. I guess that’s hard to quantify, but where else can you go where almost everyone you come across is having a good day. Little children, grandparents, grown men, families, and adults without kids all have that look in their eye. You can tell, even the most jaded and cynical of people can find something that blows their mind in Walt Disney World. I guess that’s what I love most.

MikeThe resorts.  I am not a morning person, but when I’m at Disney I wake up early.  I don’t think there is anything better than grabbing a cup of coffee, walking the resort and watching the sunrise.

5.  Best advice about podcasting you’ve ever received?  Or – What have you learned about life from podcasting?

Por Favor Gary and Gaston

My, what a guy, that Gary!

Gary:  I’m not sure if anyone has given me any specific advice about podcasting. I wish someone had told me before I started not to work with my cousin. Have you heard that guy? He’s a clown. (Just kidding Mike, you know I love ya!) The one thing I will say I learned about podcasting early on, is you can tell when someone doesn’t want to be there or doesn’t have the passion for it. If you are going to do it, give it your full effort. Mike and I decided early on that if we were going to record a podcast, we had to try and have decent audio quality and to release a show every week. Just because we were just starting out wasn’t an excuse for poor quality or an erratic schedule.

Por Favor Mike and Wife, Kristen

MikeWe got such a nice email early on and here is a piece of it…….  ‘The “newness” of the show is what makes it great…try to hang onto that as long as possible.  Sometimes, as a show goes on, the hosts think they’re getting “better” (less mistakes, more “professional” sounding delivery, etc.), but what they think is “better” actually makes the show lose some of its charm’  The original format was/is of two friends who sit around in ‘Everything Pop’ with a cup of coffee who discuss Disney.  We wanted it to be simple and fun.

6.  Best advice about vacationing at a Disney park (you think everyone should know)?

Por Favor Gary and Donald

Gary and Donald showing off

Gary:  I’m trying to think of something unique or original for this answer, but I think the best thing to do while at a Disney park is to be willing to come out of your comfort zone. Don’t be “that guy” who thinks he’s too cool to try on the Mickey ears and take a picture with them on. Go on the “kiddie” rides and be a giant goofball. No one is going to think twice about a grown man enjoying the tea-cups or Dumbo at a Disney park. Take advantage of the fact that you can be as silly as you want and you’ll fit right in with most people.

MikeDo what you enjoy most.  If I were a Disney Vacation Planner, I would be more of a consultant and listen to what interests people.  Some people like to hit ‘rope drop’ and go all day.  My wife and I like to take it slow.  We enjoy a quick breakfast at one of the monorail resorts and then hit the parks.  We also like to go back to our resort in the afternoon and swim, have lunch, relax and read a bit.

7.  How did you first learn about Disney podcasts?  Was that your inspiration for starting one of your own?

Por Favor Gary Stylin' at WDW

Por Favor Gary showing his style

Gary:  I first sought out Disney podcasts when I was researching my honeymoon trip to Walt Disney World. I was doing tons of research in my free time; reading message boards, blogs and basically trying to consume as much info about Disney as possible. I was already a fan of podcasts, I listened to several comedy podcasts at the time and I figured I’d Google Disney podcasts. I figured there was probably one or two that existed. Much to my surprise I found many to choose from. I tried out a few and settled on my rotation of favorites that were a mix of information, humor and fun discussions. I was working in the radio industry at the time, so I gravitated towards the audio medium and I really appreciated the amount of work that goes into quality audio and good production values.

If you want a sappy answer as to why I wanted to start the Por Favor Podcast here goes. It gave me a reason to talk to my cousin on a weekly basis. I’ve always been really close to Mike despite the 10 year age difference. Over time we had drifted apart slightly. We just didn’t communicate as much as in the past. As it worked out, we started planning our big family trip in February of this year and Mike and I were talking almost daily about Disney and of course other nonsense. Mike brought up the idea of recording a podcast, and I figured it would be a great way to ensure we’d be talking at least once a week. It’s been really great reconnecting to Mike. I feel like we’re closer than ever now. By the way, Mike is going to give me a hard time for saying all this. He’ll bust my chops on an upcoming episode.

MikeI’m a Dog-Walker/Pet-Sitter and I listen to podcasts all day.  Last summer, when I was working around the clock, I found Lou Mongello’s WDW Radio and fell in love with it.  I found a few similar podcasts, and I was hooked after that.  That was not my inspiration for doing a podcast.  I never thought about starting one.  Last year on Christmas Eve, I was talking with my uncle and he mentioned that he was taking the family to Walt Disney World in February and said that he would also like to take my wife and me.  Gary, his two sisters and I were like giddy teenagers getting ready for a dance.  We texted almost nightly and talked on Facebook to do our planning.  One night, Gary and I Skyped and we kind of talked about the idea of doing a podcast.  A few weeks later episode 000 was live on iTunes.  The age difference between us when I was living in Rhode Island was where I was chasing girls and Gary was watching cartoons.  When I moved to Minneapolis, the gap began to shrink.  We became very close and he would come out every few years and we’d play golf and go to Minnesota Twins baseball games.  This podcast isn’t about fame or money.  If it was supposed to be, we’re failing miserably.  It’s simply about having a chance to talk regularly with my best friend about our love of Disney.

8.  What Disney adventure (WDW visit, Disney Cruise Line, DVC membership, runDisney event, etc.) would you most like to see in your future?

Gary: The Disney adventure I’d most like to be a part of in the future is being able to go whenever I want. I don’t think I’d ever really get sick of the Disney parks, but I’d like to find out! I don’t want to live in Orlando or Anaheim, but if I could become a DVC member, it would “force” me to go to the parks at least once or twice a year. I’d be okay with that! If I’m picking a home DVC resort it would have to be either Beach Club or Wilderness Lodge. I could get used to either of those places I’m sure.

MikeWe are planning on relocating the Minneapolis D. Fauntleroy Studio to sunny Florida in the near future.  It’s a major sacrifice, but something I am willing to do to better the podcast.  No official press conference has been scheduled.  Anyway, here is the answer…My aunt, uncle and Por Favor Podcast contributor Mary are planning on being at Walt Disney World this December.  My wife and I plan on spending the weekend there and staying at the Grand Floridian.  I’ve always wanted to check that place out at Christmas.

Disney World Attraction Vehicles – Which Would You Own?

Disney's Test Track CarA while back, one of my favorite Disney podcasts, Mighty Men of Mouse, had a debate over the merits of owning a Disney World ride vehicle as transportation.  Which one would it be?  Why would one pick that particular vehicle for the daily commute to and from work?  I liked that idea!  It got me to thinking….  Lots of times, I tweet what I’m pondering and this time was no exception.  Last night while I was mentally tallying the pros and cons of Clammobiles, service elevators, hang gliders, flying elephants, magic carpets, mine trains and the like – imagining the merits of each for going to work, tooling about town, leisurely exploring country roads, off road riding through fields and turn-rows (we DO live in the country, after all) – I threw out the query to the fun Disney community I hang out with on Dinoland's Primeval Whirl Twitter…

The answers were GREAT!  But….they were as all over the place as my thoughts on this topic.  If I were going to own a Disney ride vehicle as a mode of transportation….which would I choose?

Before I announce the winning vehicle, let’s see who weighed in with a vote:

DisneyPrincess83 (@OzGoofyPrincess) instantly jumped right in! (I can always count on her to play along with my “what-if” questions!)  Her initial thought was the Friendship Boats because she’s from Australia “so they might come in handy.”  I’d hear back from the SevenDwarfsLoadingPrincess later in the debate…

Jason @JasonLiving was decisive with his choice of Doom Buggy (Haunted Mansion).  Now, since I know Jason in person (and have since he was about 6), I can say there’s no better or more suitable choice for him.  Doom Buggies are a bit creepy yet edgy and fun at the same time.  Jason likes stuff like that.

@CaptainAlabama just wanted to know if the cars at SciFi Dine-In would count as an option.  I’m guessing the Cap thinks the colorful retro convertibles (with fins!) would be a standout on the roads where he lives.  They would be eye-catching just about anywhere!

Rob @singleriderline also favored the Doom Buggy, but also thought perhaps the Kilimanjaro Safari truck would make good transportation.  I suggested Rob would be happy with BOTH sinceSailing on WDW Jungle Cruise Doom Buggies would be perfect for solo or duo travel while the safari trucks would allow you to take a whole bunch of friends out on the town….or on safari.

Safari Mike (@JamboEveryone) piped up with a vote for the WEDWay PeopleMover (a.k.a. the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover).  Cars propelled by linear induction (moving along by magnetic force) produce no pollution and are environmentally safe – Mike is all about conservation (Radio Harambe podcast), so this transportation choice makes perfect sense.

At this point, I heard from Dutch Lombrowski (@DutchLombrowski) which was GREAT since he happens to be one of the hosts of Mighty Men of Mouse – the podcast that inspired this discussion!  Dutch, like Mike, also favored the TTA.

Then the Princess (@OzGoofyPrincess) threw out another option – One that, I’m sorry to say,Animal Kingdom's Dinosaur Ride never occurred to me – the “Dinosaur Buggy” (as she called it).  I know many people don’t care for Dinosaur (the ride in Animal Kingdom) but the ride vehicles (exactly the same as used for Disneyland’s Indiana Jones ride) are brilliant.  They’re a technological marvel of highly programmable maneuverability that would, during home use, offer the owner a virtually unstoppable mode of transportation.  The Princess thought they’d be perfect for battling Sydney traffic.  Heck, they’d be perfect for just about anything!

So, while I’d been thinking about the blue Caddies from Rock’n’ Roller Coaster and the swinging cars from the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train as possible options, I must agree with the Princess’s second vote – especially once she mentioned not only the 100% all terrain maneuverability of the vehicle, but the possible advantage of time travel capabilities.  Mind blown, I salute the Princess and her imagination!

And the winner is….

The Dinosaur Cars!!!

Thanks to everyone who played along!

Your turn – which vehicle would you choose?
