Walt Disney’s Lambert – Lion AND Vinylmation

Don’t you love Saturdays with Nick?  This week’s installment is especially meaningful to me.

Lambert (2)When I was a little girl, my dad brought home a stray cat – a gorgeous Siamese fellow who was very intelligent and regal, but had the strangest way of sleeping!  When tired, this majestic feline lost all semblance of decorum and slept, limp and oblivious, on his back, all sprawled out in a way that was both hilarious and familiar.  He reminded me of a Disney cartoon I’d seen about a lion who lived among sheep and, since the cat needed a name, I suggested we name him Lambert in honor of that cartoon lion.  Lambert was a beloved member of our household for many years, so imagine my surprise when I was perusing Disney Musings and stumbled upon this amazing piece.  Enjoy!

Lambert the Sheepish Lion – by Nick
How I got the Lambert the Sheepish Lion Vinyl has a story.

I visited my local Disney Store, and they were having a sale, buy 1 Vinylmation and get a Robots 3 Vinylmation free. I picked up a Whiskers and Tales, and a Brave set, which was marked down to $7.99!

I opened up the boxes right there. The two Robots I got were Grumpy Bot and the Alien Bot from Toy Story. The Whiskers and Tales figure I got was the Baby Pegasus from Hercules.

Now, in the photo above, you can clearly see I do not have the Baby Pegasus pictured. That’s because when I opened up my box to reveal a Baby Pegasus, a young lady standing nearby gave out a little gasp. “I’ve been trying to get that forever! I’ve bought 7, and still didn’t get it!” I told her I’d be more than happy to trade for whatever figure she had. She pulled out Lambert, the Lion pictured above. She was almost in tears, and gave me a hug!
Who’s Lambert?
“Lambert the Sheepish Lion” is an animated short film released in 1952, narrated by Disney Legend Sterling Holloway, the original voice of Winnie the Pooh,  about a lion cub mistakenly left with a flock of sheep by a stork. It’s a fish out of water story about how Lambert comes into his own. It’s a wonderful cartoon which I haven’t seen in several years.
I brought it out this past weekend.
It can be found on YouTube, but I have it on the Walt Disney Treasures, Disney Rarities, Celebrated Shorts: 1920s-1960s DVD Set.

Lambert is pictured on Disc 2 (which is odd, as his cartoon is actually on Disc 1).

And he can also be found in the booklet which accompanies this outstanding set, pictured with his adoptive mother.

So the trade at the Disney Store turned out to be very fortuitous. I was able to make someone happy, and in return was reminded of an animated treasure, and have a wonderful momento as well.

Disney’s Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post

RM-Wandering-Oaken's-SignI know I’ve complained occasionally about the whole Frozen-ization of Walt Disney World.  Not everything is bad, though, or unnecessary.  One new Frozen-themed addition in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is nothing short of brilliant.  Of course adding a shop based on Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post from the movie was an obvious and easy choice, but even I have to admit…for something that seemingly came together in a hurry, Oaken’s shop is very well done, the details are adorable, and the selection of Frozen merchandise is very welcome indeed.RM-Wandering-Oaken's-Sleigh-Parking

Back in May, we could barely find anything Frozen to buy!  We chased rumors and ran around from shop to shop in every park where we thought we might score pins or a sweatshirt.  Finally, we ended up with two Olaf pins (the only Frozen pins we could find) and an extra-large child’s hoodie for Megan.  I was excited to wander into Wandering Oaken’s and will freely admit, I was charmed.Disney's Frozen - Olaf Pin

Epcot’s Lumberjack Show

RM-Lumberjack-Stage-CastI said I wasn’t going to do it.  I wasn’t going to write a review of the Lumberjack Show in Epcot because I didn’t like it and I don’t usually write negative reviews.  I try my best to write balanced reviews that highlight the good and, if any exists, the not-so-good about rides, resorts, restaurants, shows, and so on.

But every single time I look at the shattered screen on my brand new iPhone 6, I think about the Lumberjacks.  Weird, but true.  See, it all started like this……

Raymond and I found ourselves with a few spare minutes to leisurely stroll through Epcot one morning.  I checked the times for the Lumberjack Show since we were very close to the Canada Pavilion and I was very curious about this new and, well, somewhat controversial show.  The stage’s curtain was down, but we could hear show preparation noises going on behind it and decided to see what all the fuss was about – but on that day, there were no benches in front of the stage.  Those showed up the next day, oddly enough, but in the absence of seating, we moved to the far right of the stage and sat on the edge of some sort of landscaping wall.  I was wearing new pants – really adorable (if I do say) camo crops from Anthropologie and when I sat down, I set my phone on my lap.  Well the fabric of my new pants was actually more slippery than I anticipated and my phone slipped right off my leg and onto the concrete.  UGH!  I’ve had an iPhone for at least the past 5 years and have never ever even cracked a screen.  To put it mildly, I was really sad.  Raymond bought me that phone and I’d had it a month – now it was still usable, but marred.  Sigh.RM-Lumberjack-Show-Epcot

Not one to let my day be ruined by a mishap, I turned my still open-minded attention to the beginning of the show.  The show opens with a host who introduces a couple of two-man lumberjack teams – the blue team and the red team as indicated by the color of their plaid flannel shirts.  It was very hard to see!  The interior of the stage is small and quite dark; shadowed by the canvas cover that surrounds it.  I could hear the dialog just fine – the script was written so that the host and the lumberjacks are supposed to say things that are meant to be funny.  Sadly, the lines were delivered as if they were being read with poor timing and not a hint of comedy.  It was painful to watch!RM-Lumberjacks

The premise of the show is for the two teams to compete in lumberjack events like axe throwing and two-man sawing.  All conducted with those unfortunately delivered lines and in the dark recesses of the stage.  We watched in stunned silence.  THIS?  This is an actual show in a Walt Disney World park?  With all sincerity, we’d never seen anything like it anywhere before.

I guess you could say this is only a partial review because the moment those lumberjacks fired up their chainsaws we made a hasty retreat.  If I want to see someone use a chainsaw, I can go outside while Raymond trims low tree branches or cuts down a dead tree for firewood.  I do not, at any time while I’m on a Disney vacation, want to see or hear power tools in use.  How this is considered entertainment, I’ll never understand.RM-Lumberjack-Show2

So, there it is.  Epcot’s newest “talent” offering in the Canada Pavilion was not for us.  And every time I use my cell phone, I’m reminded of that sad fact.  I sure hope our local iPhone repair shop offers service on the 6 soon!  Then I can put the whole ugly mess out of my mind once and for all.

Have you seen the new Lumberjack Show?  How did you feel about it?

Walt Disney World Heffalumps and Woozles

Citricos-VinceImportant Note: Every Cast Member pictured in this post provided excellent service!

By and large, the vast majority of Cast Members at Walt Disney World have embraced the Disney magic, understand their opportunity to make a huge difference in guests’ experiences, and act in a professional, yet warm and caring manner.  They take Disney’s training to heart and in turn, pour their hearts into delivering the Disney magic.  We LOVE those Cast Members and never EVER take them for granted.

If you go (or have been) to Walt Disney World, you may have unfortunately encountered a different sort of Cast Member.  A thankfully rare sort I like to refer to as either a Heffalump or a Woozle.  These sly characters have infiltrated the Disney company undetected.  When given the opportunity, they will do everything in their power to make your day at a Disney park or resort anything but magical.  Our job is to recognize them for what they are and deny them what they want most in the whole World – to ruin our vacation.RM-Sanaa Server

“They’re far, they’re near
They’re gone, they’re here
They’re quick and slick
They’re insincere” – Heffalumps and WoozlesRM-Sanaa Hostess

People are human (like that logic?) and Disney’s Cast Members are people too – meaning that everyone gets up on the wrong side of the bed occasionally.  Everyone has a bad day.  Yes, we know that a bad attitude is supposed to be checked at the door when we go to work, but we can never know exactly what’s going on in someone’s personal life.  The “leave it at the door” practice is great – in theory.  Easier said than done sometimes.RM-Contemporary Resort Greeter

I’m not, in any way, shape, or form excusing bad service or rude behavior by Disney Cast Members – After I invest my time and money in taking a Disney vacation, I want to feel I’m getting my money’s worth.  What I’m trying to say is that it would be a tragedy to allow a Cast Member to have the power to “ruin my vacation!”.  I have a choice about whether or not I allow someone to steal my happiness.RM-Contemporary Resort Front Desk

“They’re extraordinary, so better be wary
Because they come in every shape and size, size, size, size
If honey’s what you covet you’ll find that they love it
Because they’ll guzzle up the thing you prize” – Heffalumps and Woozles

On our most recent visit to Walt Disney World we met some of the kindest, most fun, delightful Cast Members we’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.  We tried to engage each Disney employee we encountered in at least a little conversation.  We said please and thank you.  We smiled and made eye contact and in return, we were treated like the king and queen we imagine ourselves to be!  The Disney “way” is alive and well!RM-Be Our Guest Sue

There was ONE Cast Member that gave us less than stellar service.  A tall young lady at the Frontier Trading Post (Magic Kingdom) – she was condescending, less than helpful, and quick to lecture me on how unrealistic it was for me to expect to find the Halloween Annual Passholder pin in stock during the second week of October.  Silly me!  Those were sold out WEEKS AGO!  Right away I recognized her for exactly what she was and on my way out of the store, quietly under my breath, I whispered….”Woozle!”  And refused to let my day be one speck of Pixie Dust less magical.

If you receive bad service, provide feedback to Walt Disney World (find a great tutorial here) – the Disney company values what their guests have to say.  If you let a bad Cast Member interaction spoil your vacation, that’s your decision, but PLEASE don’t let the Heffalumps and Woozles ruin your day!
