Speaking of Disney

RM-Podcast-AppThere are a lot of serious discussions going on.  All day, every day.  Debates on what our country would be like with either Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton as our commander in chief, talks about investment strategies during a volatile market environment, opinions traded on how and why Cait Jenner’s voice as a woman may or may not be important to our society.  There are serious conversations about whose lives matter and what’s wrong with our country’s law enforcement system.  Chats by the water cooler about who may or may not be going to hell based on how someone has judged another’s lifestyle choices.  Heavy stuff, all of it.

We’re constantly bombarded with some very serious subject matter.  I do have opinions (lots of them), most of which I keep to myself unless I’m in the presence of a voting booth, the charities of my choice, my investment professional, or my closest friends and family.  The media thrives on bad news, violence, war, and economic woes.  I can only take so much!

When I need a break, I gravitate towards like-minded friends among the Disney fan community.  Where we have lively discussions and debates – on a subject we love to think and talk about!  Disney everything.

I’ve been a fan of Disney-themed podcasts for many years.  News, planning tips, reviews, rumors – Disney topics both broad and narrow, funny and serious, full of rants, laughter, anger, and excitement – I was totally hooked and still am.  I listen while I run, clean house, lounge in the backyard, commute to and from the office.  For so many years, it never occurred to me that one could interact with these passionate Disney podcasters, much less become one.

Dave-and-Friend

Dave’s Happy Face

After I was fortunate enough to be invited as a guest on some of my most favorite Disney podcasts, I started thinking about how much easier it is to talk about Disney than write about it.  What if I could talk about Disney with a couple of friends on a regularly scheduled basis?  I knew just who to call!  My buddy Nick Maglio was an obvious choice to join me in a new endeavor…he loves Disney as much as I do and has the most amazing Disneyana collection I’ve ever seen!  I called Nick and put a bee in his bonnet (as we say in these parts).  While he was thinking it over, I reached out to another Disney friend, Dave Hodges.  Dave lives near Orlando and had just ended a podcast he did with his daughter (The Dis Life).

Dave doing some show research

The planets aligned – Nick said yes, Dave said yes, and The Disney Exchange began.  I thought blogging about Disney was (and still is) a LOT of fun.  Podcasting about my favorite topic is even more so!  Everything’s better (and easier) when shared with friends.  Podcasting is no exception.  The Disney Exchange gives us the chance to exchange thoughts, ideas, and opinions on a wide variety of Disney topics.  We don’t agree on much, argue frequently, debate hotly, and laugh a lot.  Best of all?  We have fantastic, wonderful, lovable listeners from all over the world.  We appreciate every download and every interaction on Twitter, Facebook, Blab, Periscope and on The Disney Exchange website.  We’ve made new friends, shared ideas, found other new podcasts to listen to and are enjoying ourselves beyond belief.

Speaking of Disney

If you’re a Disney podcast fan, I’d love to know…

  • What are your favorite show topics?
  • When do you usually listen?
  • Do you listen for information or solely for fun/entertainment?

As always, thanks for stopping by!  If you’ve taken the time to download an episode or two of The Disney Exchange, thanks for listening.  We would sincerely love to hear from you on any of our social media locations or please drop us a line at info@thedisneyexchange.com

Random Stuff: Wantable Style Edit #2

Wantable BoxAfter my first Wantable Style Edit was a disappointment, I went online and gave lots of feedback on why I returned every item.  Then, with much anticipation, I waited for box #2.  And waited.  Finally I received an email on August 12th that explained the delay:

Hi!

I’m writing in regards to your August Style Edit. It’s been about 2 weeks since you placed the order so I just wanted to give you a little update 🙂 We don’t have enough items that match your preferences at this time so we’re simply waiting to add some great new items to our inventory. By taking a little more time to put together a quality edit, we are confident that you’ll love what you receive! Sometimes opening up some of your preferences (especially color choices, price ranges, body parts exposed) will allow us to match you with many more options! You’ll get an email when your order is shipped out with tracking information. We thank you for your patience & are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have by reaching out to hello@wantable.com

Best wishes,

Madelyn

Stylist

Not enough items to match my preferences?  I immediately went online to see what I could change to help the situation.  Here’s what I found:

  • On my profile, here are the things I said I didn’t want:  Tight fitting tops and bottoms, pants that are extra long, clothing that exposes my cleavage, legs, or midriff.
  • I didn’t select “dislike” for any particular clothing items – I either chose “like” or “love” for every one listed.
  • Likewise, I didn’t choose “dislike” for a single clothing style listed (classic, rock, boho, casual chic, glam).  I didn’t select “very little” for any of the occasions listed (business casual/work, cocktail/special occasion, laidback/casual, date night/night out).
  • I did opt out for the $150 and up price point in every category.
  • I liked every color except gold and beige, I liked every pattern choice given, and I declined only wool and fur in the fabric section (impractical where I live).

Overall, the body exposure portion of the survey was the one in which I selected the most restrictions.  Probably, that was the issue.  Which won’t change.Wantable-Stylist-Note

The next email I received was to tell me my August box had shipped.  I was excited when it was delivered Saturday (the 22nd).  Megan and I were spending the day together, so she was with me for the unboxing and gave me her honest feedback.

Wantable Style Edit #2Wantable-Order-Details-August-2015

In the box:  a dress, a skirt, two shirts, and a jacket.  The two tops were both by Lumiere, The jacket and skirt were both by BB Dakota, and the dress was from Kut From the Kloth.  I found it strange that labels were doubled up like that – not a lot of vendor variety.  I’ll go into all the details now, but spoiler alert!  I didn’t care for a single item, returned everything, and cancelled my subscription.  Two boxes tried, $40 gone, and nothing to show for it.  I’ll continue on with Stitch Fix which has a broader appeal and seems more friendly to customers of all ages, styles and figure types.  (Note:  All the pictures look odd because I captured them from video.  In the end, the video was sad, my disappointment too obvious, and I decided not to post it to YouTube.  By the time I decided to just write this post, I couldn’t take any clothing pictures because I’d sent everything back already.)

First item out of the box was a floral high-low maxi dress by Kut from the Kloth ($65).  Wantable-Unboxing-DressThe fabric was lovely – soft and delicate – and the style was very romantic.  I could not imagine going out in public in this dress or where I would wear it.  For someone else (read:  younger), this dress would be lovely.  On me, it looked silly and unflattering.  The straps were wide enough to cover a bra, but the front was too low-cut for me.  RM-Wantable-Floral-DressNext up, a red and cream, geo-printed long-sleeved blouse by Lumiere ($59).  Wantable-Unboxing-BlouseGenerally unflattering and ill-fitting, this top had no place in my wardrobe.  The sleeves were super long on me.  There was nothing exciting or interesting about this top.  It didn’t open all the way down (more Henley-style) and closed with small snaps.  It was very different from anything else I have in my closet.  For me to wear it to work, it would have to be tucked in – lots of fabric to tuck, which would add un-needed bulk.  To wear it casually…uhm…no.

The third item I unboxed was a thin, dressy white cross-front blouse, also by Lumiere ($59).  The front (ONLY the front) had a draw-string hem.  Wantable-Unboxing-White-Wrap-BlouseWhen I tried the top on, one of the strings pulled out from the hem completely – it was not sewn in at all, so I couldn’t see what it would look like tied.  The fit was very baggy with wide shoulders and very long sleeves.  The killer, though, was the top’s complete lack of any type of closure.  Call me crazy, but I want to be able to move around without flashing anyone. RM-Wantable-White-Wrap-Front-ShirtItem number four was a tomato-red gathered midi-skirt by BB Dakota ($54).Wantable-Unboxing-SkirtRM-Wantable-Red-SkirtHad this skirt been at all flattering on me, which as you can see, it wasn’t, it still would have posed a dilemma.  It was like the floral dress in that I couldn’t imagine when and where I would wear it.  On to the last item…

I’ve been looking for a vegan leather jacket and, upon first glance, this one, by BB Dakota ($95), showed promise.  The fabric was very thin and had a fragile feeling to it as if care would be needed not to accidentally tear it. Wantable-Unboxing-Jacket The outside was leather-like and the inside felt like suede.  The sleeves had elastic panels on the undersides that made them fit well, and the draped lapel was pretty and feminine on a black “leather” jacket.  I think it was doomed for me because I tried it on last and had been so disappointed by the first four items.  It didn’t feel like $95-worth of quality or versatility to me, so I folded it up with all the other clothes from the box and send them all back.   RM-Wantable-Vegan-Leather-JacketI still feel like a clothing subscription box has potential for me, but not this particular one.  I’ve searched the internet in general, and YouTube particularly, for recent Wantable Style Edit reviews to see if other folks are having more success, but not a lot of feedback is available out there.  If you subscribe to Wantable and have written (or vlogged) a review, please share a link in the comments.

On the bright side, I just received an email from Stitch Fix that my next box is on the way!

Sonny Eclipse – Tomorrowland Superstar

RM-Starlight-CafeWelcome to another edition of Saturdays With Nick!  The weekend is finally here and it’s time to clean the house, bathe the dog, mow the lawn, relax a bit and enjoy Labor Day Weekend!  Nick’s talking about Sonny Eclipse today!  Have you caught Sonny’s show in Tomorrowland?  If not, this will give you the scoop and make you want to check out this out-of-this-world lounge singer’s act.

Sonny Eclipse – Tomorrowland Superstar

By Nick

On almost every trip to Walt Disney World we have at least one meal at Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom.

To be honest, there are several quick service eateries in the Magic Kingdom with better food, in our opinion.

So what brings us back time and again?
The “live” entertainment in the form of Sonny Eclipse.

Sonny, “The Biggest Little Star in the Galaxy” can be found daily in the Starlight Lounge at Cosmic Ray’s.

He can be found there nightly too! In fact, it seems like the guy never leaves!

That is probably because Sonny is an audio-animatronic alien who has come all the way from his hometown of Yew Nork City on the planet Zork to entertain us on his Astro Organ, which sometimes plays all on it’s own. He is accompanied by a group of invisible background singers, The Space Angels.

Sonny tells jokes in between his eclectic mix of song selections, which include such intergalactic classics as “Planetary Boogie” and “Gravity”, which are entertaining and educational. The entire show is on a loop which lasts about 25 minutes.

If you are in Tomorrowland, stop in to Cosmic Ray’s and check out Sonny’s show. You may just wind up singing “Yew Nork, Yew Nork” the rest of the day instead of “Small World.”

Autumn at Walt Disney World

RM-Main-Street-USA-Magic-KingdomSeptember has arrived!  While I live where it’s still incredibly hot and humid, September’s arrival means fall weather won’t be terribly far away.  Kids head back to school, mornings feel a little bit cooler, and, for those who can make it, one of the very best times to visit Walt Disney World is upon us.  This year, the part of my family that will be enjoying this perfect time of the year at our favorite vacation destination does not include me.  That doesn’t keep me from being crazy-excited for our daughter, Megan, who will be honeymooning at Disney World in the very near future.

The newlyweds will be able to make the most of this wonderful chance to experience…

Autumn at Walt Disney World – 5 Great ThingsBay-Lake-Tower-Sunrise

  1. The Weather – Lower humidity, lower temperatures, and less chance of rain.  Sure, it’s hurricane season, but the odds are pretty good that the weather will be fantastic.  The skies are bluer and the sunrises and sunsets are more beautiful.  Okay, maybe it just seems that way to me, but I’d swear it’s true.RM-Magic-Kingdom-Autumn
  2. The Crowds – There’s more room!  Fewer children!  The queues are shorter, so seeing and doing more on any given day is much easier.  Fewer guests makes Disney World seem more inviting – the extra elbow room is fantastic!RM-Fall-Mickey-Pumpkin
  3. The Events – Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is a must-do event.  You must don an awesome Disney costume and experience this incredibly fun seasonal bash.  Trick-or-Treat (yes, even grown-ups), dance with your favorite characters, enjoy rides and attractions, and, do NOT (seriously, DO NOT) miss the Boo to You Parade.  RM-Boo-to-You-ParadeYou won’t believe it until you see it.  That alone is worth the price of admission.  Don’t even get me started on the joys of Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival.RM-Magic-Kingdom-Scarecrow
  4. The Decorations – Magic Kingdom gets all decked out for fall – and it’s incredible.  Sure, I love Disney World at Christmastime, but there’s a whimsical charm to the colorful leaves, pumpkins, and special touches of autumn that makes everything seem magical.RM-Magic-Kingdom-Autumn2
  5. The Opportunities – Lower crowds plus special events equals opportunity!  One of my favorites is the opportunity to slow down and soak up more magic!  Try new attractions and shows, taste new flavors, make the most of Memory Maker and pose for pictures wherever a photographer can be found.  Stroll, meander, mosey – sit and relax for a while.  You’re at Walt Disney World in autumn – and it doesn’t get much better than that.

Have you visited Disney World in the fall?  Please share your best tips for enjoying the season and I’ll pass them along to the happy couple!
