Who Would Love Talking Mickey Mouse?

Who Would Love Talking Mickey Mouse?

Last year, Raymond and I found ourselves with a few minutes to spare in Magic Kingdom. I’m not certain now if we were between FastPasses or waiting for a dining reservation, but we used the My Disney Experience app to check wait times for various attractions.  I noticed that meeting Mickey in the Town Square Theater had only a 30 minute wait.  We’d had FastPasses for Mickey that we did not use back in 2014, so I was all, “Hey! We can meet Mickey now!” and Raymond, being Raymond, took a deep breath and gave me the look that means he’ll do it because he loves me and wants me to be happy.  Off we went!town-square-theater-pigs-postertown-square-theater-sleep-poster

When we entered the theater that day, there were two lines – one for Tinker Bell and one for Mickey. Tinker Bell’s line was much longer than Mickey’s.  We moved along at a steady pace and I started taking in some of the surrounding details.  There were a bunch of cute posters to look at as we moved ever closer to The Big Cheese.  town-square-theater-headless-horseman-posterThe queue narrowed as we made our way down a hall and into a room decorated as an office.  On the far side of the room was a closed door. town-square-theater-art-publicity-dept town-square-theater-mcduck-safe town-square-theater-mail-slots As each party’s turn to see Mickey arrived, they were ushered through the door, which was quickly closed again behind them.  Much mystery surrounded the meeting of the Mouse.

Finally it was our turn! We entered what was clearly Mickey’s dressing room and there he was!  He was dressed in his magician’s costume and surrounded by much Mickey paraphernalia.  mickeys-dressing-room-props mickeys-dressing-room-wardrobe-trunk mickeys-dressing-room-tuxedoMickey walked towards us to exclaim, “It’s YOU!” and my first reaction was nervous laughter.  I was not expecting to be overcome by a small but undeniable amount of fear (for lack of a better word).  Talking Mickey was kind of creeping me out.  He said Mickey stuff you’d expect like, “Great to see ya, Pal” or things to that effect.  I’m sure he has a variety of phrases from which to choose, but we felt suddenly awkward now that we were face to face with THE Mouse.    mickey-mouse-talksHe did his best to make us feel welcome, but the talking threw me off my usually happy-to-meet-you character mode.  We posed for a couple of pictures and, saying goodbye, moved quickly for the exit.mickey-the-magnificent-meet-and-greet

My first impression of the situation was that maybe I’m too old for the kind of technological advance that makes a previously beloved (but silent) Disney character into a blinking, talking one.  I want quiet Mickey back.  While I’m sure Mickey Mouse fans of all ages may enjoy meeting this new marvel of communication, I’m probably going back to putting my character-meeting efforts into seeing Donald – who IS my absolute favorite character and still quiet as a mouse…uhm…Duck?

Have you met Talking Mickey?  How’d it go?

Hallmark 1972 Walt Disney World Book

Hallmark 1972 Walt Disney World Book

A Fun Filled Visit to Walt Disney World with Mickey Mouse: A Hallmark Pop-Up Book.

..

By Nick

Like much of my collection, I cannot recall when and where I got this book. It’s copyright is 1972.

It isn’t in the best condition, with stains and tape marks, but the pop-ups all work pretty well.

Our first pop-up is the Ferry Boat to the Magic Kingdom. But that isn’t how we are getting to the park.

We’re taking the Monorail with Mickey. Lift the door tab, and Mickey gets on board.

Interestingly, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea has been reduced to just “Submarine Voyage” here. There is a rotating wheel that rotates and shows wreckage, treasure and sea life.

Next, the Country Bear Jamboree pop-up.

It’s a Small World. Pull the tab on the right, and the drummer drums while the camel nods in unison.

The Mad Tea Party. pull the tab to see Mickey “Spin”. On one side he’s smiling, on the other, he looks as if he may be ill, which is the same reaction I have as this ride goes on.

A Jungle Cruise pop-up.

The Mickey Mouse Revue, which was housed in the space that is now home to Mickey’s PhilharMagic. Pull the tabs and the whole gang rocks out while Mickey orchestrates.

The Swiss Family Tree House. Lift the flap and see the Jungle Cruise Ruins in the distance.
Not very exciting.

Maybe the creator of this book was lulling you into a false sense of security, and then, wham!
Pull the tab on the Haunted Mansion page, and a ghost pops up! Thrilling.

And to cap off a fun filled day at the park with Mickey, fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle.

I hope you enjoyed your time with Mickey Mouse.

Mickey Mouse Disney Dollars

Happy Saturday, Disney Friends!  Continuing with last week’s theme – let’s look back in history and reminisce about the heyday of the Disney Dollar!  I remember having a few of these around when the kids were little, but at the time they *gasp* struck me as inconvenient since I had to keep up with them between visits to Walt Disney World or a Disney Store.  I can’t even remember how we got them to begin with, but I would love to have them back now!  Have a great weekend, everyone!

Mickey Mouse Disney Dollars

By Nick

87 years ago, “Steamboat Willie” was released, making a star out of Mickey Mouse.
7 years ago, Disney released these Disney Dollars to celebrate Mickey’s 80th Anniversary.

The one dollar bill features the “pie-eyed” Mickey of the early 1930′s.

1928-2008, Mickey Mouse, Eightieth Anniversary.

The back of each bill features a nice illustration of Mickey’s evolution through his 80 years.

The five features Mickey as the Mickey Mouse Club Bandleader, from the mid 1950′s.

The ten features the modern, computer generated Mickey Mouse.

Happy 87th to the Big Cheese! (Mickey will turn 88 on November 18, 2016)

Now that Disney Dollars have been discontinued, I wonder what commemorative merchandise will be released for Mickey’s next big milestone birthday?  Have you still got any Disney Dollars at home?  Are you planning to keep them now or go ahead and spend them?

Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse

RM-Mickey-Antenna-TopperMickey Mouse turns 87 today.  Like you, I grew up with Mickey – he was of my parents’ generation and they were fans of Walt Disney’s movies, TV shows, and toys.  My parents helped me on my way to being the Mickey Mouse fan I am today.  Raymond and I did our part to pass the love along to our children as well.

Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse

It’s a great day to take a look at where, when and how Mickey is part of my life everyday – and he is, maybe more for me than most people.RM-Mickey-Plate-Holder

Mickey greets me every morning in the kitchen and often joins me for a cup of coffee.  He rides to work with me on my car antenna and can usually be found as part of my attire.RM-Mickey-Mug

Mickey collectibles are treasured at our house and we’re always on the lookout in antique stores and at flea markets for the next big (or little) find we can’t pass up.IMG_2220RM-Mickey-Pocket-Watch-Open RM-Mickey-Pocket-Watch-Closed

Mickey makes up a large portion of our Disney pin collection and is the main star of our holiday decorating.  No matter the season, if you look closely, you’ll find his iconic shape somewhere at our house!  (For tutorials on making your own Mickey ornaments, see the posts here, here, and here.  For a Christmas door wreath, check here.)RM-Mickey-PinsRM-Mardi-Gras-DoorRM-Halloween-Decorations-WreathGeneral Dis Pics 11.13 061General Dis Pics 11.13 055

Speaking of finding that oh-so-familiar shape, let’s not forget how it’s become automatic for us to try to spot Hidden Mickeys – both in our everyday lives as well as when we’re on a Disney vacation.  Don’t you look for them all the time?  It’s totally normal, right?RM-NecklaceMed Cruise 2013 iphone 002 IMG_2918

Mickey and I almost share a birthday – his being just two days after mine.  Maybe that’s why he has a special place in my heart.  No matter the reason, Mickey’s always around and that makes me happy!

Do you share my love for Mickey Mouse?  Where can he be found in your day?
